On July 22, 2026, the NJEDA’s CEO Evan Weiss released the following statement regarding the Aspire Program:

“The NJEDA has decided to temporarily pause applications for the Aspire Program so that it can process current applications, protect funding for viable projects, and establish a new transparent and competitive framework. During this time, the NJEDA will review all options on how to strengthen the program. We expect to reopen applications for the Aspire Program in the fall. We are committed to updating the program with clearer standards, a stronger emphasis on fiscal discipline and project readiness, and, most importantly, alignment with Governor Sherrill’s economic development and budget priorities.”   

What we know:

  • Why is the Aspire Program being paused?
    The Aspire Program is oversubscribed. As a result, the NJEDA has decided to temporarily pause applications for the Aspire Program so that it can “process current applications, protect funding for viable projects, and establish a new transparent and competitive framework.”
  • Will the Aspire Program reopen? And if so, when?
    Yes. The NJEDA expects to reopen applications for the Aspire Program in Fall 2026 under a competitive process.
  • What happens to pending applications?
    Non-transformative projects that have a completed application are expected to move forward to the NJEDA’s Board for “thorough review and approval, distributed over several months for diligence and fairness. Projects will not be required to withdraw or reapply as long as the application is complete and has a credible path to an approval in the medium term.” Applicants will receive a 30-day notice providing them with an opportunity to resolve any deficiencies to be deemed complete. We presume that applicants that do not resolve any deficiencies within the 30-day timeframe will have their applications discontinued.

    Transformative projects that have already applied and have requested more than the $190M remaining allocation will have their application discontinued and their application fees refunded. We presume that applications for transformative projects that requested less than a $190M award will not be automatically discontinued if the application is deemed complete or if the applicant resolves any deficiencies within the 30-day timeframe. Keep in mind that the NJEDA may still decide to discontinue all transformative project applications since the total amount of funding left in the transformative bucket is $190M in the aggregate.
