The Olympic Games began almost 3,000 years ago in ancient Greece. The Games were initially held during a religious festival honoring the Greek god Zeus and were named after their location at Olympia. However, the modern Olympic Games have grown to mean so much more to many all over the world.
Today, the summer Olympics brings together athletes from territories of 206 National Olympic Committees. As attorney Courtney Sylvester discusses in this Affinity newsletter, the goal of the modern Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.
