On 24 Mar. 2023, Gulou Primary People’s Court, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China made the judgment in a first-instance case in which criminals who illegally obtained vehicle parking information and geolocation information were convicted of the crime of infringing on citizens’ personal information.
The criminals hacked into the parking platform systems and illegally obtained the instant parking locations of citizens’ vehicles stored in these parking platform systems. They aimed to locate the vehicles in these parking locations and market vehicle location tracking devices to the owners.
The case involved 13 criminals, all of whom were convicted by the court.
China has ranked first in the world in terms of vehicle production and sales for 14 consecutive years. By the end of 2022, the number of China’s motorists has exceeded 500 million. The security of vehicle location information, such as vehicle parking information and driving tracks, has also been of concern to Chinese law enforcement authorities and the public.
