Among the changes the pandemic has accelerated is the use of biometric markers for personal identification. Eye scans, palmprints, the sound of your voice, a scan of your face – biometrics are increasingly being used in myriad ways: for timekeeping, in policing, for fraud prevention, to pay for a purchase, or gain access to a physical space.
But, as these technologies become more prevalent, concerns are growing about the way they might be misused. In the US, we are particularly seeing this concern expressed at the state and local government levels, with the introduction of biometric privacy laws which, significantly, are far from uniform.
