President Adama Barrow on the morning of 12 December 2019 presided over the swearing-in of two new judges to the High Court of The Gambia.
The new Judges, Judge Alexander Osei Tutu and Judge Francis Apangabuno, were in the country as part of technical assistance from the Republic of Ghana.
With histories in International Law and Oil and Gas respectively, both judges brought with them 15 years of experience to the Gambian Bar and to the judicial sector.
President Barrow in his statement at the ceremony said his government had set out a clear policy path to ensure that the State’s judicial system regained pride, and the appointment of new judges would contribute to the judicial sector by addressing the backlog of cases piled up over a period of two decades.
‘’This development is part of the process to reinforce professionalism and rebuild our judicial system, which has suffered years of interference and disruption’’ he stated.
Chief Justice Hassan Aboubacarr Jallow said the President’s interest in reinforcing the capacity of the judiciary is proof of his respect for the rule of law and judicial independence, adding these are important pillars of peace and stability for any country.
