Facebook is not for auto-posting : It’s for engagement

I am beginning to use Facebook a fair amount to discuss things I’m passionate about.

As with most people, I am passionate about personal things (my family at a Mariners’ game) and professional things (why legal executives ought to use social).

I’m noticing lawyers and other legal professionals automatically posting items to Facebook with no intention of engaging the people who comment on or like their posts.

I comment on their Facebook posts – and nothing. I am not sure they ever even check Facebook.

Some use solutions such as WordPress’ Jetpack plugin which automatically posts your blog to social networks including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Others use Hootsuite, that with a click of a button will share an item on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and 13 LinkedIn Groups. Does it get any better?

There’s nothing inherently wrong with these solutions. But please be at the other end of the line when you phone people.

Not only is it rude to others to post and not be willing to engage, but you look like darn fool.

We get it. You want attention, you want us to see the items you like, and you may want us to see your website or blog.

But Facebook works differently than an ad or SEO. Facebook is about engagement leading to trust. Facebook is a town square. We’re all hanging out sharing items, liking stories and pictures, and talking.

If you’re up for listening, talking, and getting to know folks, join in. If not, you’re better off staying home.
