Update on Clearview High School outbreak

By Drew Falkenstein on October 14, 2010

Lorain County General Health District Health Commissioner Kenneth G. Pearce announced yesterday that Ohio Department of Health (ODH) laboratory testing has confirmed 8 cases of Salmonella B from individuals who attended a recent Clearview High School function. Lorain County General Health District sent 8 samples to ODH and all 8 were confirmed positive for Salmonella B. The investigation is ongoing.

The investigation occurs in the wake of a rash of illnesses at Clearview High School.  Around 100 students were recently ill with symptoms that ranged from severe diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems to upper respiratory symptoms.  It is not necessarily thought that all illnesses (i.e. the upper respiratory infections) are salmonella illnesses.  The investigators are looking into a meal served at a football event in the days prior to onset of most students’ illnesses.
