Trial lawyer Clarence Darrow (1857-1938) worked as corporation counsel for a big railroad before turning to labor and criminal law.  The early experience may explain his sardonic take on commercial law:

The law does not pretend to punish everything that is dishonest.  That would seriously interfere with business.
