Webcasting of court proceedings is long overdue. Webcasting would give everyone, including other lawyers, an opportunity to see what’s taking place public in courtrooms.
Michel-Adrien Sheppard, a former news researcher/journalist and now reference librarian at the Supreme Court of Canada, reports webcasting of Ontario court proceedings is to start soon. This will include the live streaming of some proceedings of the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
It’s the Long Tail concept again. Something with relatively low demand (court proceedings) can not be distributed at a high cost (network or cable TV). But when inventory storage and distribution costs are insignificant (webcasts), it becomes economically viable to sell less unpopular products.
