Marketing a Criminal Defense Practice

By Tom Kane on May 17, 2005

An attorney focusing on criminal defense asked what kind of organizations she should join in submitting a comment to my earlier No. 10 top marketing tip – Be Active in Organization(s) post.
Criminal defense attorneys should join:
*local bar associations, as many lawyers do not practice in this arena, and quite frankly, are not comfortable in it when asked by someone who has a friend or relative in trouble.
*review files to determine where your work is coming from, and who referred clients. Then, consider joining organizations they belong to (e.g., community outreach, police fraternal organizations, etc.)
*organizations that are high profile in the community where your name can become more widely known around town.
Again, it is important to be a truly active contributor to the mission of any organization you join, or it will be a waste of time.
