Proposed regulations on food nutritional labelling in Canada

By Adrienne Blanchard (CA) on July 7, 2015

On June 13, 2015, the Canadian government published proposed Regulations Amending the food and Drug Regulations – Nutrition Labelling, Other Labelling Provisions and Food Colours, for a 75 day comment period.  The pre-publication of the regulations follows a two year history of public and industry consultations, which aim to effect a large scale overhaul of nutritional labelling rules.

The changes proposed include: changes to the nutrition facts table to make certain elements such as the number of calories appear more prominent, standardizing the ingredients list for a consistent look and feel, as well as allowing a claim that fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of heart  disease.  The requirement for certification of every lot of synthetic food colour is also proposed to be removed, aligning Canada with other jurisdictions.

The proposed regulations can be found at the following link: http://www.gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p1/2015/2015-06-13/html/reg1-eng.php
