So Dr. Parwinder Grewal is leaving Vermont State University to pursue other endeavors. I wish him well.
But the trustees’ and chancellor’s request to “pause” the current plan to purge the university’s libraries of most of their physical books sounds as ominous as Bibi Netanyahu’s current pausing of his plan to neutralize the Israeli Supreme Court until after the massive protests against that power grab subside.
The plan to gut the VSU libraries should go into a Dumpster now, no pause necessary. Any trustee who doesn’t understand that, or who doesn’t understand the central role that real books and informed librarians play in any university education worthy of the name — even now, after weeks of sound commentary in VTDigger and elsewhere — might consider following Dr. Grewal into other endeavors.
Books, incidentally, are a long-recognized leveler. The most exalted universities and humblest colleges all have the same books that matter in their libraries. All except VSU?
