This year, we are lucky enough to bear witness to a magnificent event in Atlanta. Potentially on par with the hype and excitement shared when Atlanta hosted the Olympic Games in 1996, the FIFA World Cup fever has taken hold of Atlanta. In many restaurants and cafés you walk into, you can expect to find a World Cup game on the TV or overhear conversations about the scores in the air.
If you did not experience one of the FIFA Fan Festivals which you can attend for free (just need to register in advance) – I highly recommend it! Watching soccer together, enjoying activities like measuring the speed of your soccer ball kick, getting FIFA bracelets or winning flags of the countries that are competing is an extraordinary way to spend time with your friends and family and connect with your colleagues while being immersed in the completely different dimension of The World Cup.
Moments like those display my favorite part about sports in general: the capacity of athletics to unite people. In Atlanta, restaurants, parks, and various public spaces have been filled with fans watching matches and celebrating victories. Even those who do not normally follow soccer have become invested in discussions about which team is better and the inspiring stories of players displaying talent. The World Cup has amplified something unique in Atlanta: the opportunity for strangers to connect through a shared passion for sport !
Atlanta is an excellent choice to host an international event like the World Cup due to its diversity, size, wealth and capacity. Regardless of nationality or background, people come together, hug and celebrate, sharing dreams and giving all to support others.
