Each year, The Missouri Bar citizenship education department hosts a dynamic training program for educators specializing in American history, government, and civics. This year’s Summer Institute, held July 29-31, explored the evolving allocation of power within the 21st century. 32 teachers from across Missouri attended the program.

Hands-on approach 

What sets the Summer Institute apart is its immersive nature. Teachers learn about critical concepts and experience them firsthand. Working through lessons before implementing them allows educators to anticipate student reactions and fine-tune their approach for maximum impact. 

For first-year teacher Hailey Youngblood, Summer Institute offered hope and clarity as she begins her career.  

“I think my biggest takeaway has been that we can find a way to get these complex ideas into the classroom,” she said. “There are ways to help students with real world content and this will help them going forward.” 

Expert insights and networking 

Participants also benefit from esteemed guest speakers like Rhett Oldman, coordinator of social studies with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; Rod Chappel, president of the Missouri NAACP; Boone County Clerk Brianna Lennon; and Steve Davis, a lawyer with True North LLP.  

This year’s participants also received insight into what it’s like to lobby the Missouri legislature from Missouri Bar Government Relations Director Andy Briscoe.  

These sessions spark fresh perspectives and ignite thought-provoking discussions,” said Dr. Anthony Simones, director of citizenship education at The Missouri Bar. 

Seasoned educator Leslie Schneiders, a 15-year Summer Institute veteran, finds it a continuous source of inspiration.  

“I’m going on my 25th year of teaching so things can get mundane,” she said. “The materials and different viewpoints from the guest speakers are what keeps me coming back each year.” 

Investing in the future 

Leslie emphasizes the vital role attorneys play in making the institute possible. “Thank an attorney!” she urges. “This is not possible without them. Their support of teachers is huge.”
