Published by the Legislative Council (NSW) on 29 May 2024 was the report of the Select Committee on Birth Trauma.
The establishment of the Committee followed a December 2022 “Australian Birth Experience Study” from Western Sydney University. The Committee received about 4000 submissions and held six public hearings.
The Report in 5 chapters outlines 43 recommendations to the NSW Government focused on birth trauma, which in this context refers to inappropriate, disrespectful or abusive treatment before, during and after birth. Chapter 5 of the report addresses the medicolegal environment and complaints handling mechanisms.
Interestingly the Committee chair is reported to have expressed disappointment that the Committee report did not go further in some ways.
The NSW Government is expected to reply to the Report within 3 months.
