Samuel ShermanPractice areas: Business litigation and appellate practice

Law school: UMKC

Time spent as a sports editor for a small daily paper may seem an unusual beginning for a business litigation practice, but it is only one of the ways Samuel Sherman has distinguished himself. A former clerk for Missouri Supreme Court Judge Zel M. Fischer, Sherman is a former plaintiff’s class action attorney and recently completed the Ross T. Roberts Trial Academy.

He was partly drawn to the field by watching his attorney father prepare for trials.

“Whether it be clients, friends, family — his job allowed him to be a resource to his community,” the 31- year-old recalled. “Though he never pushed me into the law in any way — he certainly inspired me to into the profession.”

What is something that would surprise people about you?

When I was in college at Truman State University, a friend and I called a number of Bulldog football and basketball games on the radio for our student radio station, KTRM.

What is your favorite thing to do away from work?

First, I love to spend time with my wife. She never fails to make me laugh and there is no better partner and confidant. She also is a tremendous attorney and I rely heavily on her judgment in navigating the day-to-day challenges of practicing law. When I get the chance, I also enjoy spending time outdoors, particularly playing golf and fly fishing. In the winter, I enjoy reading, hunting, and I am far too active in fantasy football.

What is your biggest accomplishment this year?

Professionally, it’s the amount of confidence I’ve gained this year in myself and my abilities as an attorney. I credit my wife, the leadership at my firm and the opportunities I’ve been given in my work. Imposter syndrome can be a difficult voice to quiet in your head and this past year, I’ve found myself able to work past that feeling and work with an amount of conviction and fortitude that I’m not sure was there in the past.
