Australian Law Journal, Volume 97, Number 9, September 2023.
Published online with open access is a special edition of The Australian Law Journal, focusing on the judiciary. As noted by the General Editor, Justice Francois Kunc, the special issue has its origin in both historical and intellectual moments which make an extended reflection on the Australian judiciary especially opportune.
The historical moment is an important set of bicentenaries. Next month will see the 200th anniversary of the Third Charter of Justice, being Letters Patent issued on 13 October 1823 pursuant to the New South Wales Act 1823 (Act 4 Geo IV, c 96).
10 and 17 May 2024 are the bicentenaries of its promulgation and the respective first sittings of the Supreme Court of Van Diemen’s Land and the Supreme Court of New South Wales established by that charter.
The articles in the special edition are:
- Judicial influence on judicial appointments
- Centring competence – Judicial education in Australia
- Technology and judges in Australia
- Can the Australian judicial system meet the structural challenges of future population change
- Managing judicial performance – The changing ethical infrastructure
- Opportunity knocks – Designing judicial discipline systems in Australia.
