Georgia State University College of Law Lower Level Conference Center

As you begin thinking about your summer internship, your externship or your clinic, you may realize you will be working with clients who have experienced trauma. How can you best prepare yourself to advocate for your clients without re-traumatizing them? How can you minimize the effects of secondary trauma in your own life and professional practice? Join GSU clinical faculty to discuss these topics and to share a coffee break with Atlanta public interest lawyers.

From 3:30–4:30 p.m., College of Law clinical faculty will discuss how client trauma can impact representation. Hear from our practitioners about how they approach representation to avoid or minimize re-traumatizing clients while accurately and adequately helping them tell their stories to reach the desired legal remedy. The session will include concrete tips that can prepare you to work with clients who have experienced trauma.

From 4:30–5 p.m., stick around for a coffee break with practitioners and GSU public interest students.

Cap off the afternoon from 5–6 p.m. with a session on Secondary Trauma, also known as vicarious trauma or compassion fatigue. This session will focus on how to identify and address the personal impact of working with clients who have experienced trauma. GSU clinical faculty will provide specific examples of what to look for and tips about how to cope with secondary trauma to limit its personal and professional toll.

Attendance is free, but please register in advance here >>

This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Access to Justice, the GSU Public Interest Law Association (PILA), the Pro Bono Program, and the Atlanta Bar’s Public Interest Law Section. Attorney attendees may receive two (2) hours of Continuing Legal Education credit as approved by the State Bar of Georgia.
