A 44-year-old man was hospitalized following a Sunday night shooting on Riverside Avenue in Burlington.
Acting Police Chief Jon Murad said the person was shot in the chest at the Salmon Run Apartments at 220 Riverside Avenue in Burlington around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Following the shooting, the suspect ran from the scene, according to Murad. The suspect was later arrested in Winooski by the Winooski Police Department.
“We believe that person has been apprehended,” Murad said near the Riverside Avenue scene. “It’s a person who is known to us and also to law enforcement partners in the region, including our federal partners.”
Murad did not identify the suspect or the victim. In a press release issued later Sunday night, Murad said the male victim was in stable condition.
The Burlington Fire Department was on scene, and firefighters transported the victim by ambulance to the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Around 7:00 p.m. Sunday, officers with a police dog were seen searching the Salmon Run parking lot. The dog eventually followed a scent down the sidewalk on Riverside Avenue toward Winooski. However, Murad said he thought the shooting suspect was actually arrested before the dog finished its tracking.
Murad said the police dog was requested and supplied by Essex Police. Officers from the University of Vermont Police Department were on scene as well.
