The wall clock in the office
moved like a New Year’s Resolution.
It began its journey
with measured steps,
and the long thin arms
moved steadily around the fulcrum,
ticking and tocking
with a regular rhythm.
He moved into his day
and let nature take its course.
But, as time passed,
the arms of the clock
slowed,
and he felt an imperceptible movement
of gears
grinding slower and slower.
He knew that,
sooner or later,
he would rely on the tardy clock
for an important task,
and time would have passed him by.
His New Year’s Resolution
was too slow
to follow him into the future.
He would need to make
a new one.
Or, in a burst of inspiration,
just go out and buy a new clock.
