Wednesday afternoon, two siblings were killed in a car accident in Bakersfield, California. The driver of the car was later discovered to be 46-year-old Lisa Core, and Core was also found to be driving under the influence of drugs, according to the Bakersfield Police Department. Reportedly, she swerved off of the road and hit a tree after killing the pedestrians.

The two pedestrians have been identified as brother and sister, a 19-year-old JJ Malone and 10-year-old Caylee Brown, according to the family’s GoFundMe page. According to the family, the teenager was walking his younger sister home from school when they were hit.

Turnto23 breaks down part of the BPD’s release on the accident, explaining that Core is a 4th time DUI offender. She’s been charged with 2 counts of murder, 2 counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, another DUI change, and she’s also been convicted of driving with a suspended license due to a past DUI conviction.

KGET describes more of the incident. Apparently, the two siblings were standing at the corner of Panama and Hammond Way at 1:16 p.m. when the sedan jumped the curb onto Panama. After the two were hit, the car then hit a tree. Why the car swerved is unknown. The car reportedly stayed in that same spot for two hours after the crash.

The two kids were pronounced dead at the scene. Core also suffered some minor injuries and was taken to a hospital before being taken to Kern County Jail.

According to a Kern County inmate database, Core is presently being held without bail and is expected to come into court on Friday. However, the Defense Attorney initially put up a bail amount of $500 for the assailant.

The two siblings are reported to be the 52nd and 53rd pedestrian deaths in 2021 in all of Kern County.
