An Asian mother has recently been protected from the effects of a robbery when two of her children ran out to attack the assailant and make sure she was okay, after hearing screaming outside. They were just outside of their family home in Oakland when the man who had followed them attempted to pull the 54-year-old woman’s purse out from her hands and pulled her down the stairs.
According to reports from KTVZ, video footage from neighbor security systems catch the man running up to the house and pulling the woman down the front-steps. Immediately before this, the woman’s daughter, only known as Jamie, is seen driving her mother home. It is then that the 17-year-old son runs out to struggle with the attacker, allegedly after hearing neighbors screaming outside. After a brief fight for the purse, the man runs and jumps into a getaway car, and the siblings follow close behind.
Jamie, the 22-year-old daughter, claims that she and her brother weren’t really thinking of their own safety, just of how they could protect their mom. “Sometimes parents get nervous very easily and they don’t know what to do. As the younger generation we try to protect the elder generation,” she tells ABC7 News.
Jamie also explains that this is not the first time that her family has been attacked, noting two other times where they’d been attacked in two other locations within Oakland city. She chalks it up to “bad luck.”
The family will soon be adding a security system to their home as a result of this incident, though the family is thankful for neighbors who gave them access to their own surveillance footage and who screamed in order to bring attention to the situation.
According to Fox News and the LAPD, more than 110 robberies are under investigation. At least six different gangs are alleged to be involved in the string of follow-home robberies.
The mother was not severely injured, though she does suffer some minor abrasions from where the purse was pulled off of her. No arrests have been made yet.
