President Trump has just issued his latest immigration ban. This one relates to temporary work/business visas.
We’ve drafted a very quick summary of it. Note that this is not legal advice so please don’t rely on it as such and also note that the order has just been released so all we know are the below details.
Effective Dates:

It is effective IMMEDIATELY, which is pretty typical from this Administration. They don’t usually give notice or time to plan anything.

It will remain in effect until the end of the year and it can be extended as “necessary.”

There will be periodic 60-day reviews by the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State to see if modifications are necessary.
Applies to:
-
Those outside the U.S. today; and
-
Those who do not have a valid visa stamp as of today
Visa Categories Covered:
-
H-1B
-
H-2B
-
L
-
J-1 in the following categories:
-
Intern – This likely includes the Irish work & travel, also known as the “graduate visa”
-
Trainee
-
Au Pair
-
Summer Work & Travel
-
Camp Counselor
-
Teacher
-
-
Dependents of all the above
Note that E-2s, E-1s, O-1s, P-1s, P-3 are not covered by this ban.
Exceptions:
-
Those coming to “provide temporary labor or services essential” to the U.S. food supply chain
-
Anyone who would be in the “national interest” of the U.S. as determined by the Secretary of State/Department of Homeland Security
-
Green card holders
-
Spouse and minor children of U.S. citizens
This order also extended the April order banning the admission of legal permanent residents which has already separated families and weakened communities.
The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) denounces this ban. This ban has very few exceptions, and will harm employers, families, universities, hospitals, communities, and delay America’s economic recovery.
