New Jersey Child Support Guidelines: Underlying Rationale

By Stark & Stark on March 20, 2013

The State of New Jersey developed the New Jersey Child Support Guidelines with the purpose of enabling the Courts to fairly and consistently establish and modify child support awards.  The premise behind the need for Child Support Guidelines in New Jersey is three-fold:

  1. Child support is a continuous duty of both parents;
  2. Children are entitled to share in the income of both parents; and
  3. Children should not be economically prejudiced due to divorce and/or single-parent househols situations.

(See New Jersey Court Rules, Appendix 1X-A(1).
