Nanotechnologies are the design, characterisation, production and application of structures, devices and systems by controlling shape and size usually in the realm of one to 100 nanometers. A nanometer is a billionth of a meter. Due to their small size and extremely high ratio of surface area to volume, nanotechnology materials have great potential for use in a vast array of products. However, the special properties of nanotechnologies may also pose new risks for humans and the environment.
