Veterans Affairs Secretary, Jim Nicholson, stated yesterday that all troops returning home from Iraq or Afghanistan who seek any form of medical treatment at Veterans Affairs hospitals throughout the country are now being screened for brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. The new regulation, which took effect roughly three months ago, was initiated in response to the recent criticism of current veteran care.
Regardless of the treatment they seek from Veterans Affairs all soldiers have to been screened for any form of brain injury. Nicholson stated this new initiative was put in place to ensure those soldiers returning home will receive the best care available, and making the screening a priority is just one more way to increase the level of attention paid to those who serve their country. While most soldiers returning home from war are reluctant to seek medical treatment for brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder, this new screening will ensure that every soldier is taken care of.
