Senator Hillary Clinton introduced new legislation last Friday to increase support for wounded service men and women returning home from Iraq. The new bill, the Bridging the Gap for Wounded Warriors Act, will create a two-year overlap of treatment for soldiers returning home from war, a joint Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs Office that will assist in the soldier’s transition from service to civilian life, and calls for reform of the current disability rating system to ensure that there is continuity of medical care and no disruption in compensation payments made to wounded service members.
Senator Clinton hopes this bill will begin to create long-term solutions to the increasing number of problems facing a soldier’s return home. A number of other bills have also been introduced over the past few months, but this is the first to offer a long-term more permanent solution to the problem.
