Alzheimer’s Drug May Help Brain Injury

By Stark & Stark on November 21, 2006

There is no cure for brain injury, but recent research has uncovered something that may aid brain injury patients suffering from memory loss.   In a study lead by Dr. Douglas Katz of Braintree Rehabilitation Center and Boston University School of Medicine, the drug rivastigmine, which is used to treat Alzheimer’s, was given to men and women who had suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Results of the research show that the patients who were given the drug performed better on memory tests than those who were given a placebo.  More research needs to be done on using rivastigmine to treat brain injury, but the early results are promising.
